Building Sustainable Internal Capacity

You’ve seen this movie before: The company’s core business has stalled. Products are nearing their end of life. New initiatives are floundering. Forget about innovating faster; the organization had trouble innovating at all.
Leadership’s first instinct was to call in the cavalry. Consultants from one of the Big Firms. Surely, they would be able to find organizational weak spots and identify new market opportunities. The right external guidance could cure the company’s malaise and reinvigorate its revenue engines. It would take a bit of time, of course.
Doing a thorough evaluation of the company’s capabilities, capacities, blind spots, and opportunities could take months. Only upon completion could a viable new strategy, one that would take C-suite and perhaps even board-level review, be ready. Tactical implementation would follow and maybe, if everything lined up perfectly, the company might begin to feel a turn around in 12 to 18 months - many lifetimes in today’s fast moving economy.
We’ve seen this story play out time and again. Leaders, exhausted from running the same playbook, decide they don’t have the right team, the right ideas, or both. Tired and a little desperate, they gravitate toward the promise of some magic they believe they don’t have in their own organization.
But what if, rather than looking outside the organization, the company turned the lens inward? What if the capacity and capability to create a truly innovative new business initiative was harbored within? What if that capability was hiding in plain sight?
With a bias toward cultivating internal capabilities, C\R Strategy Partners works with clients to identify the assumptions and behaviors that stand as roadblocks to innovation. And we start with INSI, the Innovation Navigation Styles Inventory.
Rooted in a strong belief that innovation fails not for want of ideas, budgets, or even skilled personnel but for a lack of understanding of the often unconscious choices that drive decisions, INSI surfaces team dynamics, identifies team players with strong innovation instincts, and suggests organizational structures that foster new business growth.
Here’s how that might play out in an organization that is stalled out and looking for new growth.
The first move is not a transformation program. It is a question: who, inside this organization, is already carrying the weight of innovation without the title to show for it?
Every company has a few people like that. The person others call when they are stuck. The product leader who sees patterns across markets before anyone else names them. The operator who knows which processes block progress. The technologist already experimenting at the edges. These are your innovation champions. They are not hiding, exactly – but they are invisible to the systems most organizations use to find talent. Titles don't surface them. Reporting lines don't either. Performance reviews rarely do.
INSI does. By surfacing innovation instincts, decision styles, and team dynamics, INSI makes visible what organizational charts obscure: who can actually move things forward.
From there, the work gets structural. Those five to ten internal champions, once identified, can become the nucleus of an innovation community of practice. This is not another committee, nor another workshop with a whiteboard and a catered lunch. It is a working group with shared purpose, clear priorities, and complementary roles. The group can identify the roadblocks that keep surfacing, vote on the most urgent opportunities, and co-create small experiments with owners, timelines, and visible next steps.
This is where sustainable capacity begins to build. The organization stops waiting months for an external diagnosis or a polished strategy deck, and starts learning how to recognize its own innovation talent, connect that talent across silos, and give people a structure through which to act.
INSI functions as both a lens and a launchpad. It reveals the champions already inside the business. And it helps them form the teams needed to move through resistance and create new growth. That's how durable innovation actually starts.
