"C\R Strategy Partners provided invaluable guidance and support to get our new business off the ground. Frances helped challenge some of our thinking and in the process, helped us identify new approaches and opportunities to better align the business. Our partnership with C\R led to a revised go-to-market strategy and has positioned our brand for explosive growth.”

Background
Select Medical is one of the nation's leading post-acute care providers, operating more than 128 hospitals and 1,400 outpatient rehabilitation clinics across the United States. Their mission is to help patients heal, restore function, and return to everyday life by delivering specialized clinical care at every stage of recovery.
Cancer rehabilitation represents one of the most underserved opportunities in that mission. Over 18 million Americans are living with cancer at various stages of treatment and recovery. Up to 90 percent of those receiving cancer treatment experience at least one side effect, including pain, fatigue, and difficulty moving, yet fewer than 10 percent receive help for their symptoms. The gap between need and access was enormous, and largely invisible.
Select Medical saw an opportunity to close that gap without building from scratch. By launching ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation as a new brand within its existing national network, Select Medical could bring specialized cancer rehab to patients through the clinics and clinical teams it already had in place, innovating close to the P&L, and scaling fast.

The Challenge
The vision for ReVital was clear, but translating it into a functioning brand and business required solving five compounding challenges at once:
-
Innovating close to the P&L: The venture needed to leverage Select Medical's existing infrastructure, facilities, staff, and referral channels, rather than building new ones, creating both a meaningful constraint and a powerful advantage.
-
An uncharted market: Cancer rehabilitation was not yet widely understood by patients, caregivers, or referring physicians. Building demand required significant market education alongside brand development.
-
Brand differentiation: ReVital needed its own distinct identity, voice, and positioning that could stand independently, while still reflecting the clinical credibility and trust that Select Medical represents.
-
Go-to-market complexity: Reaching cancer patients meant navigating multiple audiences simultaneously: oncologists, patients, caregivers, and internal clinical staff; each with different needs, entry points, and decision-making dynamics.
-
Speed to scale: With 1,400 clinics as the potential footprint, ReVital needed to launch quickly, prove its model in a pilot, and build a replicable playbook for national expansion without delay.
Our Approach
C\R Strategy partnered with the SVP of ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation to build the new brand from the ground up, starting with deep customer insight and ending with a fully executed go-to-market launch in under 90 days. Four phases carried the work:
-
Research – Conduct customer research and persona development to surface the unmet needs of cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers.
-
Branding – Translate audience needs into a new brand: identity, voice, and positioning that could stand on its own while building on Select Medical's reputation for clinical excellence.
-
Build – Develop the ReVital website, content marketing strategy, and demand generation engine to reach and engage patients, caregivers, and referring healthcare providers.
-
Launch – Execute the go-to-market plan across channels: GTM channel development, sales enablement, and corporate innovation capabilities—bringing ReVital to market in under three months.
Learning & Outcomes
Within months of launch, ReVital was generating momentum on every front:
-
Brand identity: ReVital launched with a distinct, standalone brand that could stand apart from Select Medical while inheriting its reputation for clinical excellence and trust.
-
Patient clarity: A new website and content strategy gave cancer patients and caregivers a clear, accessible entry point to understand what cancer rehabilitation is and how it can help them reclaim quality of life.
-
Referral pathways: GTM channel and sales development established structured pathways for oncologists and healthcare providers to refer patients directly into the ReVital program.
-
Demand generation: A digital and content marketing engine began driving patient awareness and inbound inquiries from the moment of launch, building a sustainable pipeline for growth.
-
Scalable model: The pilot proved the concept and established a replicable playbook for expanding ReVital across Select Medical's national clinic network.
-
Innovation capability: Select Medical's internal teams built the skills, processes, and strategic confidence to continue growing and evolving ReVital as a self-sustaining new venture.
The Results
ReVital went from an unmet clinical need to a live national brand with a proven expansion model. The results:
-
Launched in 3 months: ReVital went from concept to live brand and operating service in under 90 days. A rapid build that validated the venture model and created immediate market presence.
-
Scaled to 22 states: Following a successful pilot, ReVital expanded to 22 states, establishing cancer rehabilitation as a growing and viable line of business within Select Medical's national network.
-
Revised go-to-market strategy: C\R's engagement prompted a fundamental rethink of how ReVital reaches its audiences, surfacing new approaches and channel opportunities that repositioned the brand for accelerated growth.
-
New line of business established: ReVital became a distinct, operating business unit within Select Medical, built to scale across a 1,400-clinic footprint.
-
Positioned for explosive growth: A sharpened brand identity, refined market strategy, and proven launch model gave ReVital the foundation to expand aggressively and make cancer rehabilitation the standard of care nationwide.
