Background

Select Medical is the nation's leading provider of specialized post-acute care, with 140 hospitals and more than 1,400 outpatient clinics across the United States. With more than 40,000 employees operating or supporting long-term acute care hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, and outpatient therapy centers, Select Medical provides high-quality, patient-centered care to individuals recovering from illness, injury, or surgery.

Despite that scale and reach, Select Medical faced a persistent challenge: the patients, caregivers, and partners who needed to find, evaluate, and select its services had no effective digital path to do so. The corporate website and hospital sites were fragmented, difficult to navigate, and not built around how consumers actually searched for post-acute care. A company of Select Medical's stature deserved a digital presence that matched, and accelerated, its mission.

Select Medical engaged C\R Strategy Partners to close that gap. Working with the Senior Vice President of Communications, Branding and Experience, C\R developed a comprehensive digital strategy and oversaw the redesign of Select Medical's corporate website, creating a consumer-centered digital experience that made it easier for patients, caregivers, and partners to search, discover, and select the post-acute care services that would best serve their needs.

Select Medical innovation growth model for developing and scaling new healthcare opportunities

The Challenge

Select Medical's scale and mission deserved a digital presence to match. Getting there meant resolving four concrete problems:

  1. No consumer-facing digital strategy: Select Medical's digital presence had not been designed around how patients, caregivers, and partners searched for and selected post-acute care. Without a strategy grounded in consumer behavior, the company's reach was limited by its own digital infrastructure.

  2. Fragmented web environment: Corporate and hospital websites lacked a cohesive brand, structure, or navigation model, making it difficult for consumers to understand Select Medical's full range of services or find the care most relevant to their situation.

  3. Content management bottlenecks: The corporate marketing team lacked the tools to update site content directly, creating dependencies on technical resources that slowed response times and limited the team's ability to keep digital content current and relevant.

  4. Multi-audience complexity: Select Medical's digital presence had to meaningfully serve different audiences: patients seeking care, family caregivers navigating recovery options, and physician and employer partners—each with distinct needs, questions, and decision journeys.

Our Approach

C\R Strategy Partners applied its Aligned Innovation framework to develop a digital strategy and oversee the implementation of a redesigned corporate website, while grounding every decision in a deep understanding of Select Medical's consumer audiences and organizational goals. The work moved through four phases:

  1. Discovery – Conduct a three-day organizational intake across Select Medical to surface unmet consumer needs and identify the values, themes, and business metrics essential to a successful digital strategy.

  2. Strategy – Segment Select Medical's consumer audiences into distinct personas and develop a D2C digital strategy, a refreshed brand approach, a new CMS, and modular templates that give the marketing team direct control over site content.

  3. Implementation – Develop the full digital strategy and oversee website implementation in partnership with the SVP of Branding and Communications, modernizing Select Medical's web environment and shifting the team from reactive maintenance to proactive content stewardship.

  4. Rollout – Launch the redesigned corporate site and establish the framework for rolling out the new brand and CMS across Select Medical's full network of hospital sites

Learning & Outcomes

The engagement gave Select Medical's marketing team the strategy, the tools, and the infrastructure to manage its digital presence as a competitive asset:

  • Consumer digital strategy: A comprehensive D2C digital strategy gave Select Medical a clear framework for how to engage patients, caregivers, and partners across its digital presence, organized around how those audiences actually search for and evaluate post-acute care.

  • Audience segmentation: Distinct consumer personas gave Select Medical a structured understanding of its core audiences and the different journeys each follows when selecting post-acute care.

  • Refreshed brand and CMS: A modern brand approach paired with a new content management system gave the corporate marketing team a digital environment that was easier to manage, update, and scale, without the technical bottlenecks that had slowed content operations.

  • Modular site templates: Flexible templates and modules enabled the corporate marketing team to update site content directly as needs evolved, without requiring ongoing technical support for routine content changes.

  • Internal digital capability built: The initial pilot served as the catalyst for Select Medical to build lasting internal digital web capabilities and modernize its web environment.

  • Centralized web management: Centralized management of web assets and content across the hospital network streamlined the web operations process and measurably improved customer satisfaction.

The Results

From organizational intake to a live national digital strategy, the Select Medical engagement delivered outcomes that advanced both the consumer experience and the company's internal capabilities:

  1. Digital strategy developed and implemented: A comprehensive consumer digital strategy was developed through a structured discovery process and brought to life through a fully redesigned corporate website.

  2. Corporate website redesigned and launched: The new Select Medical corporate website went live with a refreshed brand, modern CMS, and audience-segmented content architecture.

  3. Hospital network rollout underway: The new brand and CMS framework is now being applied across Select Medical's full network of hospital sites.

  4. Improved customer satisfaction and operational efficiency: Centralized web asset management and direct content editing tools streamlined Select Medical's digital operations and drove measurable improvement in customer satisfaction across the digital experience.
